bio
Shawn Prest is a musician hailing from Dundas that now lives in Granada,
Spain where he previously played with the band Greyon Red. He has
performed in numerous concerts in Spain over the last several years as
well as in Canada this past summer. His style is drawn from a mix of
various modern rock influences mixed with elements of folk and acoustic
styles.
After picking up guitar as a teenager. Initially starting to compose
music with Jon Schmidt while at University of Guelph in the early
2000's, they began to play together as Shawn and Jonny, with Prest
writing the music on guitar and Schmidt vocalizing over the music and
composing the lyrics. After numerous open mics as an acoustic duo, they
formed the band Shattertheory along with Josh Savill (bass) and Ian
White (drums). Shattertheory played a number of gigs around Southern
Ontario while producing a modest demo of 4 songs, but stopped playing
when Jon had to concentrate his efforts on finishing his studies in
Hamilton. While travelling around Asia and Europe through the latter of
half the decade, a lack of available vocalists led Shawn to teach
himself how to sing over the course of several years and tireless
efforts.
He returned to performing in Granada, becoming a local fixture at open
mics in the area while slowly developing a repetoire of original
material. This culminated with him playing a successful acoustic
concert in a packed Tertulia, a local granadino bar in late Spring 2009.
By that fall Shawn had refined his vocal skills to the point where he
was ready to start looking for others with which to form a new band and
move beyond the singer-songwriter material he had been working with. By
Fall 2009, Greyon Red was born, playing a mix of straight forward and
more alternative rock and grunge influenced by Shawn's upbringing during
the 1990's in North America. Greyon Red has played several concerts
around Granada including in Ron Ron in Motril and the Who in Granada.
An upcoming self-produced so far untitled solo album is planned for
release by January/February featuring material written over 2009 and
2010.
